THE
OLD BRUTONIAN ASSOCIATION CHARITABLE TRUST
The objects of this Charitable Trust in summary are the relief of
poverty amongst former pupils of Kings School Bruton or their immediate
dependants, the provision of scholarships to pupils at the School, the
provision of prizes based on educational merit to pupils or former pupils and
such other related charitable purposes as the trustees unanimously agree.
The trustees are the officers of the Association, currently, Sally
Snook(President), Christopher Rhys-Jones(Vice-President), David
Hindley(Honorary Secretary) and Colin Hughes(Honorary Treasurer).
Helped by the response to the Millenium Appeal the trustees awarded a
scholarship of £750 per annum commencing in September 2000. No scholarship was
awarded in 2001 due to a lack of suitable candidates but the trustees have
awarded two scholarships of the same amount to start in September 2002.
The trustees are anxious to maintain and indeed build on this progress
and would ask all Old Brutonians to consider if they can provide further
donations to assist in the trust objectives.
Under the Gift Aid tax regime governing charitable donations any
donation to a charity is eligible for tax relief, provided that a declaration
is given by the donor to the effect that the donor will have paid income tax or
capital gains tax at least equal to the income tax deemed to have been deducted
from the donations covered by the declaration. This system is very flexible and
declarations giving the required information can be given in writing by post,
fax or electronically, or even orally by telephone, although in the latter case
the charity has to provide the donor with a written confirmation. Covenants
already provided are deemed to meet the new requirements but are not required under
the Gift Aid arrangements.
It is therefore very easy to make charitable donations which are
eligible for tax relief and two forms below are provided for this purpose. Form
A is for one-off donations, where the payment is made direct to the Charitable
Trusts bank account and the form is completed and returned by e-mail. Form B
is provided for regular contributions by standing order. In this case the form
will have to be printed and completed manually and returned by post. This form
also provides for one-off donations by cheque.
Donations can be credited to the trusts Unrestricted Fund, the income
and capital of which the trustees have unrestricted powers to spend for the
trusts purposes, or to the Permanent Endowment Fund, the capital of which must
be held indefinitely and only the income of which the trustees have power to
spend. The Forms provide for donors to indicate to which of the two Funds they
wish their donations to be credited.
Please help if you can. If you have any queries please contact any of
the trustees or in particular e-mail Colin Hughes at the e-mail address shown
on Form A.
There is also a Microsoft Word document form of this page that you can download here.
